Today election procedure has evolved and even the modes used to cast votes have undergone a sea change. Ballot papers have given way to electronic voting machines. The most frequently asked question has been why did we need to replace the ballot papers? In addition to these there are several other questions that have arisen. In this section we have tried our best to give satisfactory answers to them.

 

Why are machines preferred widely worldwide?

What is the procedure of using the machine?

 

After the names of the candidates have been finalized and the symbols have been allotted to them a computer print out of the list is to be generated. Now the number of contesting candidates is to be set along with the number of candidates who have won. Thread seal with lakh and then release the vote button and start voting. This voting is to continue till the ‘time-up’ command and then the ‘close’ button is to be pressed. The result is to be viewed and a computer printout of the result is to be taken. This is the entire procedure that is way simpler than the conventional modes. A demo for the poll is to be conducted once or twice before the actual voting.

 

 

How many candidates can contest on one machine in one election?

255 candidates!!!

 

On our machines 255 candidates can be arranged at a time with their election-symbols. On one ballot box 16 buttons are provided for 16 candidates. Thus, if the number of contesting candidates is below 16 then only one ballot box is sufficient. But if the number of candidates is more than 16 then another ballot - box is to be added to the first ballot box. Again, if the number of contesting candidates is more than 32 then a third ballot box is to be added to the second ballot box. This way the ballot boxes can be increased to accommodate more number of candidates.

How many voters / votes are possible in one machine?

9,999 voters

On one machine 9,999 voters can cast their votes in one election (Theoretically). But the election time granted is usually 8-10 hours so in this constricted time as many as 1000 to 1100 voters can vote in practice. And for multiple or panel voting this figure reduces further. So more number of machines is used for more number of voters.

Is Electricity necessary for this machine?

 

This is battery operated device hence there is no need for electricity to operate this machine. Simple pencil cells of 1.5 volt [AA] that are available easily in local market are used to power them. Any brand of battery like Eveready, Nippo, Duracell or BPL can be used.

Battery - life?

The battery life of any normal pencil battery is 21 hours. After their exhaustion they can be replaced easily. When the cell voltage goes down then a 'battery low' indication is displayed. Then take the machine off, remove the wire, the connectors from the cell containers and replace the cells. Put back in the machine and resume. This will interrupt no data.

[Suggestion: - Take new cells for every election, then no need to replace cell in between that election process].

How many times can the machine be used?

Since the machine is re-usable these can be used any number of times. Remove all the previous data by pressing the ‘All-Clear’ button and the machine is ready for use in the next election.

Can the total number of voters be seen in – between?

Yes. Simply checking the number of voters up to that time by pressing ‘Total’ button can easily do that by.

Can the Result be seen in-between?

No, that is not possible as the ‘Result’ button is in seal. After the completion of election the 'Close' button is to be pressed and then the seal for thee ‘Result’ button is broken in front of representatives and only then 'Result' button can be used  to see the result

We have employed Software lock for buttons. There is no need for any mechanical cover on the button. Extra buttons other than the setting button remain inactive automatically.

Can one candidate accept Double vote?

No, that is not possible as software lock is provided for all buttons.

Is tampering possible?

No, tampering is not possible on this machine as Thread-Seal is used. Signed Paper with signatures of representatives is used after mock pole demonstration. If seal is intact then machine is also intact.

Can Voting data be preserved for 1 to 2 years?

Yes

Can ‘Close’ button be pressed in emergency? Can the ‘Escape’ button be kept secret?

Yes.

The ‘Escape’ button is already a secret button, which nobody can see.

Is Computer connectivity and print out of Result possible?

Yes, as there is provision for USB connector that can be connected to the computer printer.

Doubts should be cleared from the minds of all candidates, representatives, so mock election demonstrations should be given before voting.

The LED glows after complete casting of vote in the account of that candidate and not just after pressing the corresponding key.

What is the COST?

These are very economical.
